Getting Started

Getting into MistXI is now easier than ever with the MistXI Launcher — a custom-built application that automates installation, patching, and configuration.

New to MistXI? The launcher handles everything automatically. From zero to in-game in about an hour.

Existing player? The launcher auto-detects your installation and simplifies addon management.

Quick Start (New Players)

  1. Download the MistXI Launcher

  2. Run the Launcher

    • First-run wizard starts automatically
    • The launcher will guide you through each step

  3. Install FFXI (if needed)

    • Click “Download & Install FFXI” in the wizard
    • The launcher downloads and installs FFXI automatically (~3.5 GB)
    • Or skip this if you already have FFXI installed

  4. Complete the Patching Workflow

    • DSP Patch — Launcher installs automatically (UAC prompt required)
    • PlayOnline Update — Launcher opens PlayOnline for file check
      • Choose “For PlayOnline Members”
      • Use ABCD1234 for username, password, and account ID
      • Click “Check Files” → Select “FINAL FANTASY XI” → Click “Check Files”
      • Wait for validation (~20-40 minutes depending on hardware)
      • Click “Fix the errors” when prompted
      • Wait for updates to complete
    • Data Folder Copy — Launcher copies data automatically (UAC prompt required)

  5. Reboot Your Computer

    • Required to set Windows Registry components
    • The launcher will remind you

  6. Create Your Account

  7. Launch and Play!

    • Enter your MistXI username and password
    • Click “START GAME”
    • Welcome to Vana’diel!

Total Time: ~1 hour (mostly waiting for PlayOnline updates)

Quick Start (Existing Players)

Already have FFXI installed? The launcher makes setup even faster:

  1. Download the Launcher

  2. Run the Launcher

    • Launcher auto-detects your FFXI installation
    • If not detected, use the Browse button to locate it

  3. Complete Patching (if you haven’t already)

    • Follow steps 4-5 from the New Players section above
    • Skip if you’ve already patched for MistXI

  4. Configure Your Settings

    • The launcher includes 36+ configuration options
    • Create profiles for different setups (fullscreen, windowed, performance)
    • Enable your favorite addons with checkboxes

  5. Play!

Manual Setup (Advanced)

If you prefer to set up Ashita manually or are troubleshooting:

Ashita Setup

  1. Download Ashita
  2. Download xiloader
  3. Extract Ashita to a permanent location (not Desktop)
  4. Place xiloader.exe in the ffxi-bootmod folder
  5. Launch Ashita and create a new configuration:
    • File: .\ffxi-bootmod\xiloader.exe
    • Command: --server play.mistxi.com
    • Script: default.txt
  6. Configure your addons and plugins via Ashita

Updating Your Client

When the server updates, you may see a version mismatch error. Here’s how to update:

Using the Launcher

The launcher keeps Ashita and XiLoader up-to-date automatically. If you get a version error, just restart the launcher and it will grab the latest bootloader versions.

Manual Client Update

  1. Navigate to \PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI\ROM\0\
  2. Delete the 0.dat file
  3. Open PlayOnline Viewer
  4. Click “Check Files” on the left
  5. Select “FINAL FANTASY XI” in the dropdown
  6. Click “Check Files”
  7. PlayOnline will find errors — click “File Repair” → “Yes”
  8. Wait for updates to complete
  9. Re-launch through the Launcher

Troubleshooting

Launcher Won’t Start

  • Ensure you have Windows 10/11 (64-bit)
  • Check antivirus isn’t blocking it
  • Try running as administrator (should not be required)

FFXI Not Detected

  • Click the Browse button and locate your FFXI folder manually
  • Common locations:
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\PlayOnline\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\FFXINA\SquareEnix\FINAL FANTASY XI

“FINAL FANTASY XI” Doesn’t Appear in PlayOnline

  • You need the DSP patch
  • The launcher installs this automatically in step 4
  • If doing manually, download the DSP patch and extract to your FFXI folder

Addons Not Loading

  • Ensure the “addons” plugin is enabled (launcher does this automatically)
  • Check %LocalAppData%\MistXILauncher\logs\launcher.log for errors

Version Mismatch Error

  • Delete \ROM\0\0.dat and run PlayOnline file check
  • Or restart the launcher to get the latest updates

System Requirements

  • OS: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit)
  • Disk Space: ~15 GB (for FFXI/POL/launcher)
  • RAM: 4 GB minimum
  • Internet: Required for downloads and gameplay
  • .NET: 8.0 Runtime (included with launcher)

Account Creation

Before you can log in, you’ll need a MistXI account:

  1. Visit mistxi.com/create-account
  2. Discord verification is required (helps prevent bots and spam)
  3. Create your username and password
  4. Use these credentials in the launcher
